why is it right to call the dark phase of photosynthesis as a light independent phase

It is because light is not needed to start the process

dark reaction does not mean that it only occurs at night time , it means that it does not require light to complete the reaction. Therefore it is right to call the dark phase of photosynthesis as a light independent phase
