why is it right to call the drink phase of photosynthesis as a light independent phase

because in photosynthesis , light is necessary . In leaves there is choroplast which trap sunlight . As plant can take water and nutrients their self but only it depend on sunlight as that why plant can't perform photosynthesis in night .
