Wherever superior-subordinate relationship exists, it is often the case that the superior gives instructions on what is to be done. The subordinate is expected to abide by these directions. A manager who directs people immediately under him is usually bound to follow the directions given to him by his boss. So, directing will always take place in an organization wherever superior subordinate relationship exists.

Superior-subordinate relationship is the interaction between organizational leaders and their subordinates and how they work together to achieve organizational goals.

Where this exist, directing takes place because most orders are given by superiors to the subordinates in form of downward communication and this explains why it is directive.

REASONS FOR DOWNWARD COMMUNICATION (communication form superior to the subordinate)

1) Implementation of goals, strategies and the organization's objectives - Superiors communicate new information that will keep the subordinates on the same page and thus help them achieve organizational goals.

2) Performance Feedback - The superiors give the subordinates progress reports so as to ensure that there is uniformity along organizational boundaries.

3) Job instructions and rational - Superiors help in giving the subordinates successful ways to accomplish tasks.

4.) Socialization - The superiors ensure they communicate a sense of belonging to the subordinates to help them in become part of the organizational culture.

As for the subordinates, they communicate to the superiors to raise their complaints, grievances, appeals, judgments, estimations and reports which again lie in the hands of the superiors to decide.
