Why is it said that velocity is distance/time?

bcoz velocity is also called speed and speed is distance/time.

when we know surely about direction., that is always in one single direction... then speed is the magnitude of velocity.  Then the displacement and distance become the same.

then it is said that velocity = distance/time.
