Hey mate ,
Kilometer is the bigger unit of distance .
While calculating long distance it is not prefered to use centimetres as it will turn out to a large figure and it would be difficult to remember as well as to do documentations of those distances . Kilometres solve this problem of large figures
While calculating even longer distances like distance between two heavenly bodies kilometres scale also fails hence we use more bigger units .
Hope you find it helpful!!!

We know that Kilometre is the largest (biggest) unit of measuring long distances and centimeter is a smaller unit of measurement. So ,we use kilometres instead of centimeter as result we perform small calculations.
