Why is ladder better than tree in heredity and evolution?

The process of evolution shows similarity when it is compared to the branches of a tree in place of a ladder.
It is because of the fact that due to the requirements of changing environment, organisms show some changes or modifications in their existing structures which later on gets inherited in the new generation also.
As these changes occur in already existing structures the process of evolution said to progress from simple to complex level rather than from a previous step to the new one as in case of a ladder.
