It is done to loosen up the soil particles so that it could hold more water than before.

Ploughing helps in certain ways. Few of them are listed below:-
1.It provides aeration and drainage.Cells in the roots need oxygen to carry out respiration and thus grow.
2.Loosening the soil helps the roots to penetrate deep in soil.
3.Fertilisers mix uniformly with loosened soil.
4.Loose soil aids the growth of earth worms and microbes.
Levelling:-
The ploughed soil often has crumbs of soil which need to be broken for efficient growth of plants before sowing seeds.
