The process of seeking justice is time consuming and expensive in India. For these reasons Lok Adalat was set up to provide speedy justice. A Lok Adalat is presided over by a retired judge along with two other members, usuallya lawyer anda social worker. It is also called the People's Court because:
1.the cases are solved through mutual understanding and compromise
2. no severe punishments can be given
3. the process is a lot more cheaper than in any other courts
