Why is matchstick lighted by rubbing it on the rough surface provided on the side of the match box? ​

When the matchstick is rubbed against the side of the match box, some of the red phosphorus is converted into white phosphorus; this immediately reacts with potassium chlorate in the matchstick head to produce enough heat to ignite antimony trisulphide and starts the combustion of matchstick.

When we rub a match stick on the rough surface of the matchbox,it produces heat due to friction. This heat raises the temperature of the chemical present on the matchstick head to its ignition temp. Therefore, The chemical Substance catches fire and the matchstick start burning
