Usually, the first cell division in meiosis is the main type of a much followed process by which germ cells are formed.

In reduction division, usually the number of chromosomes is reduced from diploid (46 chromosomes) to haploid (23 chromosomes).

This is also known as first meiotic division and first meiosis.

Meiosis is called reduction division because number of chromosomes in daughter cells is reduced to half than that of parent cell.
