•That's because Nitrogen(N) has an atomic number of 7(7 electrons are present in the N atom).
• So, when the electrons are placed in their respective shells(ie; 2,5) two electrons in the first shell and 5 in the second, it would need 3 more electrons to complete its octate( a rule in which except the first shell all the main group elements would tend to combine to have eight electrons in its shell) .
Using this octate rule as stated earlier, the Nitrogen atom, to complete its octate when kept in the presence of Hydrogen( an element that can gain or lose electrons, that means it can stabilize itself by gaining one electron to end up having two in its shell or lose it) the Nitrogen and hydrogen react covalently with each other and since Nitrogen only needs three more electrons to complete its octate, it bonds covalently with three hydrogen atoms.

Actually the chemical name is nitrogen trihydride(nh3) but the common name is ammonia
