As we know that Carbon has electronic configuration of 2,4. it has 4 valence electrons in the outer most shell in order to complete it's octave it has to loose 4 or to gain 4 electrons.
So in both case Carbon gets unbalanced.
hence it is not easy to make ionic compound.
Therefore Carbon make covalent bond i. e. electron sharing.
