Organic matter: The living microbial biomass comprising microorganisms that helps to breakdown plant wastes and other detritus present in the soil.

Importance of organic matter to plants:

Healthy soil is required to produce healthy crops. Plant take nutrients from soil from 2 sources namely – organic matter and minerals. Organic matters present in the soil provide not only nutrients and habitat but also binds the soil particles together to improve the water holding capacity of the soil. Soil usually contains 2-10 % organic matter. Even a small amount increases the fertility of the soil.
