It is because oxygen is required for cellular respiration or Aerobic respiration.

Cellular respiration is a process by which living organism produce energy from the food they eat.

Oxygen supports human and animal respiration.

This sub atomic structure, attach each oxygen molecule to another by solid covalent bonds.

Generally each of the oxygen particle is linked to another with the help of the  feeble intermolecular or Van der Waals forces..

Subsequently, a low measure of energy is required to beat these weak forces and oxygen has a low breaking point. For these reasons, oxygen is a life-saving gas.
