The reason is because oxygen is required to produce ATP.
When glycolysis takes place, the result is pyruvate. In order for it to be aerobic, pyruvate must be oxidized in the mitochondria via the citric acid cycle. The products of this process are CO2 and water but most importantly, formation of FADH2 and NADH.
