Pi is an irrational number simply because it does not have a exact decimal equivalent. It can only be derived to the infinite.
You cannot write a simple fraction that is equal to pi. 22/7 is a rational number but pi is not a rational number because 22/7=3.1428571428571...which is close but not accurate.

Anonymous: Pi can be written as Pi/1.
PaulinaChelsea: so why is it irrational?
PaulinaChelsea: If it can be written in the form p/ q
Anonymous: Because 22/7 isn't pi. It's just used as an approximation for some practical purposes. Most importantly, the definition of an irrational number is that it cannot be expressed as a ratio of two integers a/b.
