Pituitary gland is also called the master gland of the endocrine system as it produces hormones which controls many body functions including growth of the body. It controls the function of other glands as well.
The pea-sized pituitary gland is very important for the growth of the body. If pituitary gland doesn't produce growth hormone in a child, the child will have a short structure from the birth and will never be able to grow.
Without the pituitary gland, the body won't be able to reproduce and many functions of the body will stop work and growth of the body would be impossible.
Thus, pituitary gland is called the master gland.
