Keeping this catastrophe in mind, the king of France ordered that all walls made of wood in paris be immediately covered with plaster, as a protection against such fires.

Paris had a lot of gypsum deposits at that time , and the king's order resulted in the large scale mining of the mineral . Thus, the city of Paris became the centre of plaster production, and hence the material came to be know as plaster of Paris
