The Laburnum Top’ is a poetry by English writer and poet Edward James Hughes (1930 – 1998). He mainly wrote stories for children.

In this poetry, he describes the quiet beauty of the laburnum tree, with its golden flowers. The quietness is broken by the shrill whistle and arrival of a goldfinch which awakens the whole tree, along with its fledglings whom it has come to feed. As soon as the feeding is over and just as quickly as it had come, it leaves the branches of the tree with an eerie, delicate whistle, almost like a whisper and flies away into the distance leaving the laburnum quiet once more.
