Pteridophyta or Pteridophytes (In the meaning of Greek: pteris- fern, phyton- plant) which are seedless vascular plants that have sporophytic plant body, inconspicuous gametophytes containing small sessile antheridia and partially embedded archegonia with 4-rowed neck.
Talking about the reproduction; Pteridophytes generally occur in cool, damp, shady places. Some are extended to sandy soils. Azolla, Salvinia, Marsilea are aquatic and occur in water. So, because of that water presence is a must for them.
Another point which are quite analogous to it are the Sperms which are bi or multi-flagellate. As of, they require an external water supply of water to reach archegonia.
