As meiosis takes place in reproductive cells both gamets of male and female has to merge to get an offspring so there is half number of chromosomes will be present in both the gamets

Reduction devision is important so that the no. of chromosomes in a particular species remain constant.
In meiosis four haploid daughter cells are formed which have half the no. of chromosomes in it as compared to the parent cell therefore it is referred to as reduction division.
