Aquarium is an artificial ecosystem which contains fishes as living organisms. In natural ecosystem other organisms are also present sufficient to maintain the balance.
In natural aquatic ecosystem, the unbeaten food or fish waste turn into ammonia, bacteria then turn this pollutants as non-toxic nitrates. So if water of aquarium is not clear regularly then the wastes could accumulate to dangerous level and the fish could even die.
