First we know respiration is:
Glucose + oxygen #-># carbon dioxide + water

Cell extracts energy from glucose by breaking down bonds between the carbon atoms in the presence of oxygen. When carbons bonds are broken, #CO_2# is released as a waste product. During this reaction energy is released and transferred to the energy carrier of the cell called "ATP" (Adenosine tri-phosphate), which stores and transports energy to other part of the cell. 
Therefore respiration is an important process for plants in order to obtain the energy they need to perform their biological process.
