Why is revolt of 1857 also called 1st war of independence???

yeah ,it is also called 1st war of independence

because it was the first major attempt by Indian' s to gain their independence from the british
though there where many attempts earlier before 1857 the revolt of 1857 is the first revolt in which most of the Indian princely state come together to oppose the British
but it was not a successful for the Indians
and there are also other names for the revolt of 1857
