Why is rheostat always connected in series not in parallel????

Because the current flows through the path having the minimum resistance. ... This tendency of current makes it flow through the path parallelto the rheostat if it has got lesser resistance than the rheostat. This is why a rheostat is neverconnected in parallelunless it is required to do so.

If the rheostat is connected in parallel then the total resistance decreases

Hence it is connected in series
