It needs to be disinfected to be safe to drink because there are disease organisms in river water. There are other websites out there that can answer your question, so you can use those.

river water is not potable 'coz it is untreated nd contaminated with viruses,bacteria nd parasites which can cause diseases such as diarrhoea,nausea ,weight loss nd energy loss.
