Rusting is an oxidising process in which metal reacts with oxygen, forming its oxide. The oxide substance has very weak attractive forces to remain attached to the pure metal surface beneath it, so it wears off the metal. So gradually metal will become thinner and weaker as more layers come off which is stated as slow eating of metals.
