Why is salt used to remove the leech attached to the skin of a person?

when a leech attaches to our body we usually get rid of it by pouring salt on it or by taking it by hand.But pouring salt on it cause the leech to remove from the skin as it is a simple process of osmosis.
but pouring salt on leech may cause the leech to vomit its stomach contents which cause severe infections.so handpicking of the leech and first aid the wound by antiseptics is best method to remove the leech.
