Self-regulation is the ability to manage your emotions and behavior in accordance with the demands of the situation. It includes being able to resist highly emotional reactions to upsetting stimuli, to calm yourself down when you get upset, to adjust to a change in expectations and to handle frustration without an outburst. It is a set of skills that enables children, as they mature, to direct their own behavior towards a goal, despite the unpredictability of the world and our own feelings.

Self regulation is important, specifically for children. The ability to regulate one’s behavior at a level appropriate for age is crucial for effective learning at all ages. This capacity for ‘self regulation’ is based on a suite of skills that support emotion regulation, behavioral modulation and executive control processes. The development of self-regulation skills is especially critical in the pre-school years when the foundation for learning is laid down. Indeed, evaluated prior formal academic schooling, self regulation skills predict academic performance in the early grades better than earlier academic readiness skills. Fostering self regulation skills must be integrated into the regular curriculum.
