The word prodigal is a biblical allusion referring to the prodigal son who had taken some wealth from his father and went away from his home. He spent all the money in enjoying and was left with no money. Thus, he returned back to his home. Here, Bassanio is referred to as the prodigal Christian as he is using all the money Antonio gave him in enjoying his life.
