Why is simply copying the DNA in a dividing cell not enough to maintain continuity of life?

because simply pushing 1 copy of DNA in other and remaining one copy to be in parents reproductive tissue is not possible and division of cellular apparatus is necessary for its working . Otherwise DNA will not exist and offspring would die

Copying the DNA strand does not give you two cells. A dividing cell requires other bodies like mitochondria, ribosomes, centrosomes etc too to function as a cell.
