It's all due to dispersion of light.
When the sun's rays reach the atmosphere, white light gets dispersed into many colors, which refract in different amounts. As a rule, dispersion α 1/λ⁴.
(where λ is the wavelength). Blue light has less wavelength and more frequency than red light, so blue light gets dispersed more than red light. The blue light gets dispersed everywhere and so the sky appears blue.
