Slaked lime, when applied on walls, as you might have noticed, looks like water. There is no color to it, you might wonder. So why do we use it to whitewash. Well, once that water like mixture (slaked lime) is applied, it is left overnight. During this time, it reacts with the Carbon dioxide that is present in air to form Calcium carbonate which is white in color and hence sticks to the wall. Next time you see it, you know it!
