Why is sodium chloride soluble in water but not in kerosene or petrol?

This is because water is polar, that is, there is a separation in the more positive and the more negative side of water, whereas that doesn't exist in petrol and kerosene. Since “Like dissolves like,” therefore, kerosene and petrol don't dissolve in water and other polar liquids. hope it Helps
