Why is sodium kept immersed in kerosene oil

If sodium or even phosphorous is kept in contact with the atmosphere , it may catch fire . And that is why sodium is kept immersed in kerosene .

sodium reacts so vigorously with oxygen that it catches fire when kept in opens. Hence, it protect accidental fires, it kept immersed in kerosene oil
