Why is soft iron used as the core of a transformer?

The soft iron core increases the strength of the magnetic field inside a transformer. The main purpose of using an iron core in a transformer because iron is a magnetic material and it is easily available everywhere. The core is laminated to reduce the Eddy current and hence Eddy current losses.
