Solid carbon dioxide is known as dry ice because it actually looks like ice that actually doesn't melt , it sublimates that is it directly change from solid to gaseous state ..

Solid carbon dioxide is known as dry ice because physically , it looks like ice .

But when it melts , it undergoes sublimation , that is , gets converted into gaseous form directly rather than liquid.
