Why is sound wave is called longitudinal wave ?

Longitudinal wave is the one in which particles of medium move in the direction of propagation of the wave..same phenomenon happens while a sound wave travels in air.It travels forming alternate COMPRESSIONS and RAREFACTIONS.in the air.

sound wave is called longitudinal wave because it is produced by compressions and rarefractions in the air.the air particles vibrates parallel to the direction of propagation
