The electrical switch contact is mechanical. The supply to fan is AC voltage of 340V peak. If the switch opening (switch off) happens at or near zero crossing no spark appears. If the switch opening time is near peak value and gap between the switch points exactly matches (dynamically) with spark gap of voltage at that instant current jumps through the switch gap and creates spark. This will degrade the switch. The spark can happen at fan switch ON time also.
