Benjamin Franklin used the name United Colonies of North America about the time of the war for independence from Britain in 1775 but another name came out on the announcement of Independence that was accepted on 4th July, 1776. The announcement used the name United States of America.
That's why states of America called United States of America and states of India are not called like that.
