why is sulphuric acid not used during the reaction of alcohols with KI?

As H2SO4 is a strong oxidizing agent, it oxidises HI to form I2 molecule. As a result, the reaction b/w alcohol and KI to produce alkyl halide doesnt occur in presence of sulphuric acid
