1) Poultry farming is done for eggs and meat. The fowls are of two types- broilers and layers.
2) Broilers are those poultry animals which yield meat while layers are egg yielding animals. Broilers are fed with protein and vitamin rich diet whereas layers are fed with protein rich diet in order to increase the egg production.
3) Management practices to be adopted in poultry farming are;
- Hygienic conditions
-Cross breeding for improved variety of breeds
- Immunisation to prevent spread of infectious diseases 4) The desirable traits obtained after cross breeding indigenous and exotic breeds of poultry birds are as follows:
(i) Increase in number of chicks.
(ii) Improvement in quality of chicks.
(iii) Dwarf broiler parent for commercial chick production. The food and space requirement of dwarf birds is less. Hence, it is profitable.
(iv) Summer adaptation capacity/ tolerance to high temperature.
(v) Low maintenance requirements.
(vi) Reduction in the size of the egg-laying birds with ability to utilise more fibrous cheaper diets formulated using agricultural by-products.
