Camels were their prized assets. They provided mobility in the desert; were good draught animals; could survive continuous spells of hot and arid conditions; and, during drought and famine when other livestock perished, they offered nutritious milk. In fact, the Raikas recall that in 1937, when large parts of Rajasthan was hit by a famine, people survived just by drinking camel milk.
