why is the coil of heating element of a heater made from a metal?

Answer:

Because some metals offer high resistance to electricity. When electricity is passed though the heating coil, due to it's high resistance it heats up and hence, acts as a heating filament. ... The tungsten filament in it resists the electric current, and produces light, and also heat.
