the energy level diagram of hydrogen was suggested by Bohr which says that electrons will be filled first in lower energy level(shell) and then to higher energy level

but this diagram only works for few elements (hydrogen and hydrogen like species)

so the new diagram which follows aufbau rule(electrons will be filled first in the subshells with low energy (low n+l value) and the to the higher energy subshells) is followed
