;Hemodialysis requires the use of high volumes of freshly prepared, clean dialysate to foster the removal of low molecular weight metabolites (i.e., urea) and to ... As such, in order to correct metabolic acidemia, patients on dialysis require the replenishment of bicarbonate via diffusion from dialysate during hemodialysis.
