Topographic maps are used by many different people. Parallels and meridians form a locational grid over the surface of the earth.Maryland is not THAT far north!

grid in a topo map us made just to help us to find the location if a place, find its 4 figure grid reference and 6 figure grid reference, drainage pattern, contour lines, settlement, flow of river etc...
