Mitosis is very important to live of a species because it generates new cells to grow and replaces dead cells.

For the purpose to examine cells in the tip of a root of onion, a thin slice of the root is placed onto a microscope slide and made to be stained so that chromosomes will be visible.

An onion root tip is a rapidly growing in nature and includes in the onion and thus many cells will be formed in different stages of mitosis.

The onion root tips can be prepared and squashed in a procedure that allows them to be flattened when seen through a microscopic slide so that the chromosomes of individual cells can be viewed easily.
