A Constitution is a body of doctrines, basic laws and principles of a nation, organisation of society, that defines the powers of the government or the organisation. A Constitution also defines the form of Government, approximate number of people or bodies that will rule the country and at the same time, define the division of powers in the government.
★ Making of Constitution :-
• India was ruled by the British for nearly 200 years. The Indian freedom fighters were aware of the importance of drafting a Constitution that gave equal freedom and rights to all the citizens of India ; something that was denied to them under the colonial rule.
• The Constituent Assembly was formed in 1946 to draft the Indian Constitution. It had over 300 members.
• Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was the chairman of the drafting committee he is also referred to as the Father of the Indian Constitution.
• Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Maulana Azad, Sarojini Naidu, Vijaylaxmi Pandit were some of the eminent members of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the Indian Constitution.
• Drafting the Indian Constitution was no mean feat.
• India is a diverse country with people of different origins, culture, languages, religions etc.
