This may not be english, but male gharials or gavials are reptiles with close ressemblance to crocodiles though with a thinner feeding mechanism with a more wider snout to trap fishes. As to why they are aggressive, the males are more territorial in terms of their mating and feeding grounds. As for the book however, no idea.
